Alexandra Lanzarotta – LXandra Jewellery
After graduating from G.P. Vanier Secondary and the University of Victoria, I moved to the Lower Mainland to pursue a career and raise a family. During these years I began what has become a life-long journey of studying and learning jewellery-making techniques.
Although I am mostly a self-taught artist, I have studied lampwork glass techniques under Joanne Andrighetti and Barry Edwards, and have recently taken several silver-smithing courses with Barry Edwards.
It is my hope that my designs, in some small way, transform those who wear them. I like to think that my jewellery is about the magic of individualism and transformative power of style. If a piece conjures a memory or feeling, or shapes our self-perception, it becomes part of our unique sense of self.
In the past 20 years I have presented in several shows, including the following:
Filberg Festival (several years)
Courtenay Christmas Show (Charles Dickens)
Island Music Festival
Qualicum/Nanaimo Christmas Show (Kris Kringle)
Coquitlam Christmas Craft Fair
Hycroft Christmas Artisans Show
West Coast Women’s Show
One-of-a-Kind-Show in Victoria
I have sold my work in the Object Design Gallery on Granville Island and Cricket Gallery in Maple Ridge, and have participated in the Maple Ridge Artist Studio Tours for many years. I have also held several sales fairs in my own sales studio in Maple Ridge and had developed a consistent following of people who attended on a regular basis.
I now live in the Comox Valley and will be participating in this year’s Comox Valley Artist Studio Tour. I will also have my home studio open for a private studio sale at Christmas, the first of what will hopefully become a more frequent sales event. I am very much looking forward to taking a more active role in the Comox Valley artists’ community and to participating in Island-based artisan shows and events.
Jewellery is, for me, a form of self-expression, intuition and creativity. Keeping color, balance, structure, and uniqueness in mind, I design intriguing one-of-a-kind creations. My designs incorporate several aspects of expressing my creativity. A necklace, for example, may have several hand-woven gourd stitch beads, my own lamp work glass beads, and my hand-crafted sterling-silver caps and sterling-silver precious metal clay clasps and charms.
My work encompasses a wide range of techniques and materials. I have my own lampwork torches and use these to create beads. As well I work with several bead looms to create earrings and bracelets, and work with needle and fireline to weave a variety of patterns for necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. I have a press set up to hand-braid leather for bracelets and necklaces, and a station to manufacture metal rings to create chainmaille jewellery. I incorporate various materials including leather, precious and semi-precious stones, vintage glass, vintage shells, and sterling silver. My techniques and materials change from year to year, with resulting changes in the designs and styles I bring to fairs.
In recent years have expanded my collection of jewellery styles to include Saami-inspired bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. I base my hand-crafted Saami jewellery on the traditional art form, and add my own designs and braiding patterns for a unique blend of past and present. I use only the highest quality soft vegetable-tanned reindeer leather, hand-spun pewter/sterling silver, and copper thread, imported from the Lapland region of Sweden. I use naturally-shed horn caribou antler buttons and unique vintage pewter or industrial snaps for my closures. Each Saami creation is one-of-a-kind and takes 6 – 12 hours to create.
Each piece of jewellery I create has an emphasis on fine craftsmanship, unique design, and inspiring colors. Twenty years of exploring and developing my creativity has allowed me to create jewellery that is modern yet classic, feminine yet fun, romantic and playful…..with the ultimate goal of making women feel radiant and beautiful. I consider myself to be both a professional artist and a craftsperson who creates unique pieces that are sure to delight for many years.
