Artist Statement – Helen Utsal My paintings are an expression of how I feel in Nature. Hiking and paddling, I cherish the quiet sounds and stillness. With my camera and my painter’s mind, I mark moments, capturing imagery of light shining bright and chartreuse on stirring leaves, or fat moss… shifting reflective light on the water… With paints, charcoal, and chalk I make paintings to express the many moods of the forests, lakes and rivers and my sense of awe. This is a sacred kind of inspiration for me. As an artist, it is my privilege to witness and reflect the exceptional Canadian landscape that manages to convey both an ancient power and newborn vitality.
Helen Utsal – Biography Helen earned her BFA at Concordia University, in Montreal After working as a Studio Assistant to professional artists for 3 years in Montreal, Helen re-located and began working in the film business in Toronto. As a member of unions IATSE873 and NABET Helen worked as a Scenic Painter for a decade in Toronto. 1997-1999 – Scenic Painter at Atlantis Casino and Resort, Nassau, Bahamas 2001 – Relocated to British Columbia 2006 – Solo Exhibition at Millennium Place Whistler. ‘West Coast Trees’ June -Representation at Art Junction Gallery, Whistler Exhibiting since 2007 – Various
