Contemporary fine art painter born in Ontario now lives in the Comox Valley, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. April invites you to visit her 2-storey art studio in a beautiful setting of mountain and forest views to see her latest works in acrylic and oil paint. April has an artistic style that people are saying is uniquely original to her. Design/Interior and portrait commissions are considered.
April’s colourful paintings includes abstract, representative and figurative subjects. Her paintings are luminescent achieved by the layering of many colours. Each painting is often completed with drawn lines to isolate the colours and to emphasis contours.
She is known for her playfulness with perspective and enjoys trying to provoke a feeling in the viewer.
Over the years nothing has been sacred from April’s paintbrush. She has painted murals on windows, walls, buildings and even her 1979 diesel VW Rabbit Car.
Her painting process includes thumbnail sketches, studies and preparing platforms for a painting. She enjoys doing very large paintings and commission work.
An self-taught contemporary artist who has completed 100’s of paintings and now offer the public the opportunity to view, comment and purchase her work.
She sets a high benchmark for all her works and seeks to achieve a high level of craftsmanship by preparing her own panels and canvases. Most paintings are done in oil because of the proven endurance of the medium.
She especially focuses on learning to draw the human form and uses her sketches and drawings as a jumping off point to create paintings of a spiritual nature.
“I independently study fine art. The nude model has always featured strongly in my personal training, a difficult genre and therefore the most ‘educative’ one.”
“At a young age I used to secretly go downtown Toronto, Ontario from the suburbs to a life drawing group at a community centre. I had to throw away all these drawings so not to be found out. Since then I have joined many Life Drawing groups.”
Despite her passion for painting, it wasn’t always certain April was destined for a career as an artist. She travelled and held management positions in luxury hotels across Canada and was Communication Coordinator for the successful fundraising and building for a project in Sidney, BC (Mary Winspear Community Cultural Centre).
“My high school art teachers strongly encouraged me to attend College or University to study art, and I had the opportunity of completing my Foundation at the Victoria College of Art in 2004.
