Sandpiper Furniture designs and makes custom furniture in the Arts and Crafts and Danish styles with or without a twist.
I make custom hardwood furniture, mostly in the Arts and Crafts style, with or without a twist. Frank Lloyd Wright, Gustav Stickley, Greene and Greene and Charles Rennie MacIntosh provide the historic sources of inspiration. Contemporary inspiration is provided by my professional experience in developing numerous public parks and recreation facilities in the City of Vancouver. Working with Vancouver’s leading architects and landscape architects has given me a professional life time exposure to the principles and practices of good design and the importance of detail. Having retired in 2010, I have now transitioned into a woodworker artisan. As I mature in this vocation I have also broadened my repertoire by making Danish style pieces.
From our property in the Comox Valley I operate out of a small ocean side historic cottage built in the 1930s. Now a neat little workshop, it is equipped with a variety of woodworking machines and quality hand tools. Since 2011 I have been a regular participant in the Filberg Festival.
I design my own pieces or modify traditional designs and add a twist to create interest and to be playful and eye catching. Wood may have an unexpected curve or angle, a tabletop may appear to be floating, or I may use contrasting species of wood beyond the traditional use of inlays and small accent pieces. Cherry, Beech, Birch, Mahogany, Maple, Walnut, Quarter Sawn Oak, Teak and Alder are my principal woods.
My pieces are intended to be used and in equal measure to be decorative and they are designed, made and sold to discerning clients throughout Vancouver Island (incl. Comox Valley, Campbell River,Victoria, and Nanaimo) and elsewhere in BC (incl. Vancouver, Whistler, Kamloops)
